I made this meme to be posted alongside my usual homework reminder announcements.
I made it because I realized that virtually every announcement that i’d written at the time began with Hello Everyone! This made me think of how Professor Farnsworth, a character from a comedic cartoon sitcom; Futurama, began every appearance with the phrase “Good news Everyone!”, even when the news wasn’t that good. In addition to adding this and other multimodal elements to my announcements I tried making each subject line slightly different in order to attract the attention of my students.
The session in which i implemented these changes resulted in an increase in student engagement! In previous sessions, I received zero emails. After implementing these changes, several students reached out—something I hadn’t experienced before. That outcome has motivated me to put even more effort into announcement writing, create more memes, and develop additional student resources.
